Harriet Tubman was an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian, and a Union Spy.
Her Life
Tubman was born a slave before the American Civil War. She was mistreated, often being whipped and beaten as she grew up. After escaping slavery, and arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she decided to go back to Maryland to save family members. She had success, and didn't stop there. She managed to bring many groups of slaves, and never lost a single one on the way. Later, during the Civil War, she acted as an armed scout, and continued to liberate slaves. Tubman is considered an American Hero.
