About Hans Bethe
Hans Bethe worked with the Los Alamos National Laboratory as the head of the Theoretical Unit during the Second World War. He played a crucial role in the development of the first-ever atomic bomb, and also helped to manufacture the thermonuclear weapon after the war.
In addition to that, the German-American physicist contributed to fields like quantum electrodynamics, astrophysics, and nuclear physics. He was best known for his stellar nucleosynthesis work during the late 1960s.
Family
He was the son of Albrecht Bethe and Anna Kuhn. He had two kids with Rose Ewald whom he married in 1939.
Education
In 1924, he became a student of the University of Frankfurt. This renowned scientist also studied at the University of Munich.
Awards
He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1967, and the National Medal of Science in 1975. Some of his other laurels were the Benjamin Franklin Medal, the Henry Draper Medal, and the Bruce Medal.
Trivia
Bethe played a key role in the signing of the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, as well as the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
He, alongside Albert Einstein, were against the nuclear arms competition.
