This playwright and poet did not receive much acclaim until after the 19th century. Hannah Cowley has been called the most underrated foremost playwrights in Britain by some. There is no denying she was a gifted and expressive writer.
Background
Growing up, Cowley benefited a lot from a wide range of books. She moved to London after marrying her husband Thomas Cowley and wrote her first play “The Runaway” in 1776.
Career
Hannah Cowley decided to write more plays to support her family. She wrote “Who’s the Dupe?” and the tragedy “Albina” by the end of 1779. She gained recognition in 1780 when she wrote “The Belle’s Stratagem” and three years later she wrote “A Bold Stroke for a Husband”. This English poet penned some poems like “The Scottish Village”, “The World”’ and “The Poetry of Anna Matilda”. Cowley retired in 1801 where she spent her time revisiting her plays.
