About Hanna Reitsch
Hannah Reitsch was one of three German women to be a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. She was the first female helicopter pilot in her country.
Family and Education
She was born into an upper middle class family. She attended a flight training school in 1932. While in medical school, she got admitted into a German amateur aviation school.
Career
She had a deal with Ufa Film Company and became a stunt pilot. During her stay at the company, she set a tolerance record for women of 11 hours and 20 minutes. In 1934, she became a member of the Deutsche Forschungsansatz Für Segelfurg. A year later, she was a test pilot. She was part of the few pilots to have flown the Forke-Achgelis Fa 61.
She was also an author and published books like “Das Unzerstorbare in meinem Leben” and “Hohen und Tiefen”
Achievements
Reitsch was the first woman in the world to be promoted as flight Captain by Colonel Ernest Glider.
She won the German gliding competition three consecutive times.
Death
She died in August 1979, aged 67. The cause of death was heart attack.
Trivia
She never got married.
Following the end of World War II, she visited the West African country of Ghana and collaborated with then-president Nkrumah in an effort to impart into the country her knowledge of flying.
A staunch supporter of Adolf Hitler, she was part of the last people to see the Führer alive.
