About Hank Jones
The versatile and distinguished jazz pianist was the oldest of the Jones brothers. An unassuming soul, he was content to be a side man for over 35 years of his career.
Early Years
Born in Vicksburg in Mississippi in 1918, he took piano lessons at an early age and was greatly influenced by such Jazz pianists as Teddy Wilson and Earl Hines. In his early teens, he hopped on territory bands and played in the Midwest.
Career Facts
Earlier in his career, he worked briefly with the likes of Jon Kirby, Coleman Hawkins and Andy Kirk. For nearly 6 years, he went on tours with singer Ella Fitzgerald. The late 1970s witnessed his role as a pianist and conductor on the Broadway’s “Aint Misbehavin” and his work with the Great Jazz Trio. In the 1980s, he joined George Duvivier and Sonny Stitt on a Japan tour.
Awards
He was awarded the title “National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master” in 1989, and in 2009, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys.
