About Hamid Karzai
Prior to becoming the president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai had been an active fundraiser for the jihadists in the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s.
He also had previous experience in government through his appointment, by former president Burhanuddin Rabbani, as a Deputy Foreign Minister.
From December 2001 to July 2002, he served as the Afghan Interim Administration’s Chairman. He continued in the capacity of interim president until 2004 when he contested in and won the election. His second term ended in September 2014.
Family Life
He is the son of the late Abdul Ahad Karzai, former head of the Popalzai tribe and Deputy Speaker of Parliament. After his father’s death, Hamid became the Popalzai tribe head.
He married gynaecologist Zeenat Quraishi in 1999. They have three daughters and a son.
Trivia
He is remembered for his charisma within the international community and has been honored by a number of bodies. He holds honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Nebraska, Boston University and Georgetown University.
