About Hafez al-Assad
Hafez al-Assad was a Syrian politician, statesman and air force officer who served as Prime Minister of Syria from 1970 to 1971 after seizing power in a coup. He went on to serve as President of Syria from 1971 until his death in 2000. His long rule saw Syria enjoy stability and become one of the most powerful nations in the Middle East. His son Bashar al-Assad succeeded him as president upon his demise in 2000.
Family Life
He was the ninth son of his father Ali Sulayman al-Assad. In 1957, he got married to Anisa Makhlouf, with whom he fathered five children including Bassel and Bashar al-Assad.
Trivia
In 1994, his eldest son Bassel al-Assad, who was expected to succeed him, died tragically in a car accident. He was 31.
He survived several attempts on his life.
He exiled his younger brother Rifaat al-Assad from Syria after he tried seizing power from him.
