About Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden
Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden left a legacy as having contributed largely to the European superpower status of the Swedish Empire. He served as the King of Sweden from 1611, when he was just 16 years old, until his death in 1634. By employing combined arms, he established himself as one of modern history’s all-time greatest military commanders. Having ascended the throne at a time when the infamous Thirty Years’ War in Europe was ongoing, he successfully improved Sweden’s military standing.
Family Life
He was the son of Charles IX, King of Sweden and Christina of Holstein-Gottorp. He was married to German princess Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg, with whom he had four children. Only one, Christina, survived and she became the Queen of Sweden. He also had one illegitimate son, Gustav of Vasaborg with his royal mistress, Margareta Slots.
Death
He was killed on November 6, 1632 during the Battle of Lutzen.
