About Gustave Whitehead
Gustave Whitehead was a German-born American engineer who claimed to be the first to fly a powered engine, though this assertion has been refuted by many historians and researchers. As a boy, Whitehead began his training as a mechanic. He was employed by the Boston Aeronautical Society in 1896 where he collaborated with Albert B. C. Horn to build an ornithopter.
He made history in 1901 when his first aircraft named Number 21 took off, according to his claims. The monoplane, which had a wingspan, was featured in the Scientific American magazine that same year.
Family
He was originally named Gustav Albin Weisskopf, and was one of the children of Babetta and Karl Weisskopf. He was married to Louise Tuba Whitehead and had a son named Charles.
Trivia
In 1974, the "Aviation Pioneer Gustav Weißkopf Museum", which was named after him, was established.
His love for flying earned him the moniker "the flyer".
