About Günther von Kluge
Günther von Kluge was a German field marshal who was known as one of Adolf Hitler’s commanders on the Eastern and Western Fronts during World War II. He later played a small role in the 1944 conspiracy against Hitler.
Early Life and Military Career
Kluge was raised in an aristocratic home. His father was a lieutenant general in the German Army. During World War I, Kluge served in the army along with his father and younger brother. He remained in the army following the war, rising to the rank of lieutenant general in 1934.
During the Second World War, he successfully led invasions into Poland, France, and the Soviet Union. In 1944, he appeared in incriminating documents of a conspiracy against Hitler and was dismissed from the army. Kluge committed suicide in anticipation of his arrest.
Personal Life
He married Mathilde Marie von Briesen in October 1907.
