About Guion Bluford
Hailing from the United States of America, Guion Bluford is an ex-Air Force officer, retired National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronaut, and an aerospace engineer. He is the first black American to visit space.
Between the period 1983 and 1992, Bluford was a participant in the 4 Space Shuttle flights. In 1966, he received his United States Aviator Badge. The following year, he was a T-38A pilot instructor at the 3630th Flying Training Wing. In 1978, Bluford was given the opportunity to become a member of the NASA astronaut group 8.
From 1997 to 2001, he was part of the Board of Governors for the National Space Club. Again, from 1997 to 2003, he served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Western Reserve Historical Society. Within that same year, he was also part of the Board of Directors for the Great Lakes Science Center. Also, Bluford was among the Board of Advisors for the Coalition for Space Exploration for four years.
Education
He attended the Overbrook High School, Pennsylvania State University, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Houston–Clear Lake.
Family
His parents are Lolita Bluford and Guion Bluford Sr. He has two siblings namely Kenneth Bluford and Eugene Bluford. In 1964, he got married to Linda Tull. His two children are Guion III Bluford and James Bluford.
Awards
In 1984, he was the recipient of the Defense Superior Service Medal. He was also honored with the Legion of Merit in 1993. In 1978, he received the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal. Again, Bluford won the Vietnam Service Medal in 1967. Additionally, he won the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 1992 and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal two years later.
