Family
He was the only child of Daniele Reni and Ginevra Pozzi.
Career
He studied at Denis Calvaert’s painting studio at the age of nine together with Domenico Zampieri. Few years later, he moved to the Accademia degli Incamminati, a studio which was managed by Ludovico Carracci. In 1598, he had a misunderstanding with Ludovico Carracci which made him leave the school.
He partnered with Annibale Carracci to complete a project in Rome. While in Rome, he received a commission to paint the Crucifixion of St. Peter and later became one of the painters to be mostly patronized by the Borghese Family.
In 1614, he was able to build a studio at Bologna. Few years later, he was hired to refurbish the cupola of the chapel of Saint Dominic in Basilica of San Domenico, which was one of the major churches in Bologna.
Other notable paintings of Reni include “Massacre of the Innocents”, “David with the head of Goliath” and “Polyphemus”.
Legacy
He was known to be one of the best painters of his era. Also, all the people he trained became successful painters, including Antonio Giarola, Francesco Gessi and Giovanni Boulanger.
