In 1911, Grover Cleveland Alexander set the rookie record for the most wins (28). He later went on to play 20 seasons in the Major Baseball League, recognized for being one of the best pitchers in the game.
Childhood and Amateur Career
Alexander grew up in Elba, Nebraska with twelve other siblings. During his teenage years, he played amateur baseball for the Galesburg Boosters and the Syracuse Stars. In 1911, he was sold to the Philadelphia Phillies.
Professional Career
He made his MLB debut in April 1911 and completed his rookie year with 28 wins, the highest of the season. Alexander also played a key role in leading the Phillies to win their first World Series game. He later played for the Chicago Cubs and the St Louis Cardinals.
Death and Legacy
In 1938, Alexander was inducted into the Baseball’s Hall of Fame. He died in 1950 and two years later was portrayed by Ronald Reagan (later 40th President of the United States) in “The Winning Team”, a biographical film directed by Lewis Seiler.
