About Gregg Toland
Gregg Toland was one of the outstanding cinematographers because he possessed a rare combination of technical and visual innovations. He received six Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography and eventually won one for his 1939 work “Wuthering Heights”, which is an adaptation of English novelist Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel of the same title.
Early Life
Born in Charleston, Illinois, Toland was captivated by the film industry. He moved to Hollywood at the age of 15 and got a job as an office boy with Fox Studios. In a year, he became an assistant cameraman and soon became the youngest cameraman in Hollywood.
Career
Toland was ahead of his time creating his deep-focus compositions. His first work “The Life and Death of 9413:A Hollywood Extra” was released in 1928. He used a sound-proof housing camera that enabled directors to shoot close-ups without camera noise interfering.
This Hollywood genius worked with several legends in the industry such as John Ford, Howard Hawks, Erich von Stroheim, and William Wyler. His most significant work was the 1941 film “Citizen Kane'' and his unique style is visible in the film.
Toland used technicolor to make the visual bright and saturated in the 1946 film “Song of the South”, which starred Lucile Watson, Ruth Warrick, and James Baskett.
Using deep focus, Toland’s films were realistic and highlighted all the aspects of the characters.
In 2003, he was voted one of the top 10 most influential cinematographers in the history of film.
Death
Toland’s career was cut short when he died in September 1948 at the young age of 44.
