About Gregg Allman
Gregg Allman, born Gregory LeNoir Allman, was an American singer, songwriter and musician. Having performed in several local bands since the beginning of his music career in 1960, he went on to find fame as a founding member, vocalist, songwriter and keyboardist of the Allman Brothers Band, which was formed in 1969.
He also began a solo career in 1973 with an album titled “Laid Back”. As a songwriter for the band, he is credited for the hit singles, “Melissa”, “Whipping Post” and “Midnight Rider”.
Family Life
He spent his childhood years in Nashville, Tennessee. He would later reside in Daytona Beach, Florida with his mother, Geraldine Robbins Allman and his elder brother, Duane after their father, Willis Turner Allman was murdered.
He was married seven times, his third marriage (1975-1979) to singer Cher being the most publicized. He had five children.
Achievements
He is an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Georgia Music Hall of Fame. He was also honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Death
He died from liver cancer complications on May 27, 2017.
