About Giuseppe Zangara
In 1933, Zangara became infamous when he attempted to take the life of then-President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR). The assassin was brought to trial and sentenced to death.
Early Career of Zangara
The Italian-born was a soldier in the Tyrolean Alps in World War I. Upon returning home, he did a lot of menial work since he couldn't find a stable job. He later had the opportunity to migrate with his uncle to seek for greener pastures in the United States in 1923 and got naturalized in 1929. Zangara lived most of his life without proper education and suffered from incurable gallbladder disease.
Zangara's Assassination Attempt on FDR
The Italian soldier was tasked to appear at the Bayfront Park in 1933 in the hope of assassinating the president of the United States. He armed himself with a 32-caliber US Revolver Company gun he bought at a pawn shop and camouflaged in the crowd. He shot at the president but missed him terribly, hitting 5 people, including Miss Margaret Kruis and Mrs. Joseph H. Gill, who was wounded in the abdomen. He was later apprehended and imprisoned.
The Execution
Zangara spent 10 days on death row and was executed in 1933 in an electric chair.
