About Gilbert Stuart
Gilbert Stuart was a celebrated American painter famed for his drip painting technique. He was regarded as one of the country’s greatest portraitists.
His well-known works include the “Athenaeum Portrait”, an incomplete portrait of George Washington; “Abigail Adams”, “Commodore John Barry”, and “John Bill Ricketts”.
He died of a stroke at the age of 72.

He was a staunch supporter of the British monarchy.
In Rhode Island, he trained with Scotch artist Cosmo Alexander, who assisted him with one of his earliest portraits titled "Dr. Hunter's Spaniels".
His work may now be seen in art institutions around the United States and the United Kingdom, most notably at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art and Frick Collection.
