About Giacinto Facchetti
Giacinto Facchetti was an Italian football icon who played for Inter Milan between 1960 and 1978, establishing himself as a club legend. In addition, he was widely considered one of the best left-back defenders of all time.
Background & Early Career
He began his soccer career as a forward but eventually switched to becoming a defender at his native team, GSD Mario Zanconti. He played for Trevigliese between 1957 and 1960 before joining Inter Milan in late 1960.
Club Career Highlights
He was one of the earliest left-backs to play with the overlapping style. His ability to support the game’s defense and attacking plays was a major component of Italian coach Helenio Herrera’s Grande Inter team and catenaccio philosophy, which dominated international football in the 1960s.
Between 1960 and 1978, he played 634 official matches for Inter Milan, netting 75 goals and winning one Copa Italia, four Serie A trophies, and back-to-back European and Intercontinental Cups. In 1965, he was the second-best player in the “Ballon d’Or.”
International Career
He earned 94 caps for Italy and represented them at three FIFA World Cups (1974, 1970, & 1966). He also captained the Italian team that successfully achieved a “host and win” campaign in the 1968 UEFA Euros.
