About Gerry Goffin
Gerald Goffin was an American songwriter, best known for co-writing several international pop hits of the 1960s, including “The Loco-Motion” and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” with his wife, Carole King. Throughout his career, he wrote over 100 Billboard Hot 100 hits. In 1990, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with King.
Early Life and Career
As a young boy, Goffin often wrote songs in his head. When he graduated high school, he enlisted to serve in the US Marine Corps and then later attended the Annapolis Naval Academy. He resigned after a year and decided to study chemistry at Queens College.
He met King in college and the two began their musical collaboration. The pair married in 1959, pursuing their songwriting careers when they weren’t working their day jobs. They received their first break with the song “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?”, performed by The Shirelles.
Although the couple split in 1968, they continued to work together. Goffin also collaborated with other songwriters, including Michael Messer, with whom he earned an Oscar nomination for “Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To”, and a Golden Globe nomination for “So Sad the Song.”
Later Life
In 2004, Goffin and King received The Recording Academy’s Trustees Award. Ten years later, their lives were adapted for the Broadway show “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”, which earned seven Tony nominations.
