About Germanicus
In AD 7, Germanicus was appointed into a public office in Ancient Rome. He was later sent to the Illyricum province to help resolve a rebellion by the Dalmatians and the Pannonians. Two years later, after his return to Rome, he received the praetor title for his heroics during the Batonian War.
In AD 13, he was placed in charge of the Roman’s army based in Rhine. With his appointment, he controlled a third of the kingdom’s military force. That same year, he was selected as the proconsul of Gaul, Germania Inferior, and Germania Superior.
Between AD 14 and 16, his army fought and defeated the Germanic tribes which made him one of the most admired army officers in the history of the kingdom.
Family
His parents were Antonia the Younger and Nero Claudius Drusus. His two siblings were Claudius, and Livilla. He was married to Agrippina the Elder with whom he had many children including Gaius Caesar (Caligula), and Julia Agrippina.
Death
According to some ancient facts, he died from poisoning.
Fun Facts
His character was portrayed by English actor Eric Flynn in the 1968 television series “The Caesars”.
He was the inspiration behind Nicolas Poussin’s painting titled “The Death of Germanicus”.
