About Gerda Lerner
Gerda Lerner was the first person to teach the history of women as a course. Between 1980 and 1981, the American historian operated as the leader of the Organization of American Historians. As an educator, she worked with some prestigious institutions like Long Island University, Sarah Lawrence College, and Duke University.
Her Other Works
The Austrian-born historian was also a writer and poet. In her 1986 book “The Creation of Patriarchy”, she tried to explain the cause of the patriarchal concepts in the Western society. Some of her other well-known publications were “Fireweed: A Political Autobiography” and “A Death of One's Own”.
Family
She was the daughter of Robert Kronstein and his wife Ilona Kronstein, who was a popular artist. Her 1939 marriage to Bobby Jensen lasted for a year. In 1941, she got married to Carl Lerner. She left behind two children named Stephanie and Dan.
Education
She studied at the New School for Social Research, and later at Columbia University.
Recognitions
The American Historical Association honored her with the Joan Kelly Prize in 1986. She became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1998. Other awards that she received included the Bruce Catton Prize, as well as the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians Special Book Award.
Trivia
She was the subject of the 2016 documentary film titled “Why Women Need to Climb Mountains”.
During her time at Sarah Lawrence College, Lerner helped to develop a degree program in the study of women’s history.
