About Gérard de Nerval
Gérard de Nerval was the pseudonym of the 19th century French romanticist poet and author Gérard Labrunie. His style of poetry and prose served as a forerunner to such movements as surrealism and symbolism.
Childhood & Earlier Works
After his mother's death, he lived with his father while studying at the Collège de Charlemagne. In 1828, he rendered the French version of Goethe's tragic play, “Faust" which was applauded by the German poet himself.
Career Highlights
From 1839, he suffered a mental breakdown, yet his most significant works were written in that period. He published a collection of essays titled “Les Illuminés” and followed up with “Les Petits Châteaux de Bohême” three years later. His best work was the novella “Sylvie,” which told the story of a man’s love for three women. His voyage to Cairo and Beirut inspired his renowned fiction “Voyage en Orient” in 1851.
Personal Life
In 1855, he committed suicide by hanging himself from a window bar.
