About Georges Danton
Georges Jacques Danton was a French politician. He is remembered for his contributions to the French Revolution (which saw to the abolishment of the old political and social system of the Kingdom of France) in the early 1790s. He has arguably been credited with being a principal force in establishing France’s First Republic. He served as the President of the Committee of Public Safety (France’s provisional government) from April 6, 1793 to July 10, 1793.
Family Life
He was the son of Mary Camus and Jacques Danton, a lawyer. He was married to Antoinette Gabrielle Charpentier from January 1760 until February 1793 (her death) and they gave birth to three sons. He later married Louise Sébastienne Gély.
Execution
After standing trial in April 1794, he was handed a guilty verdict on charges of corruption, conspiracy and theft. He was executed by guillotine on April 5, 1794.
