About George VI
George VI served as the King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 1936 until his death in 1952. He became King after his elder brother King Edward VIII abdicated in order to marry a divorced woman. During his reign, he effectively led the British people through World War II and restored his people's confidence in the British monarchy. After his death, his elder daughter Queen Elizabeth II succeeded him.
Family Life
He was the son of King Edward VII and Queen Mary (Mary of Teck). He married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Queen Elizabeth) in 1923. The couple had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret.
Trivia
He was the first Head of the Commonwealth and the first British monarch to visit the United States.
