About George Stephenson
Mostly described as the "Father of Railways", George Stephenson made lots of contributions to the development of railway activities in Britain. He’s credited for being the constructor of the first steam-powered locomotive to have conveyed passengers on a public railway. The train was known as Locomotion No. 1.
In 1830, he constructed the Liverpool and Manchester Railway known to be the first-ever public railway line to connect two cities.
Family
He’s an offspring of Mabel and Robert Stephenson. He was married to Ellen Gregory. Prior to their union, he had married and divorced Elizabeth Hindmarsh, and Frances Henderson.
He completed most of his works with the help of his son Robert Stephenson. He had another child named Frances Stephenson who died at a very young age.
Facts
Before turning 18 years, he couldn’t read or write.
He worked at Black Callerton Colliery as one of their ‘brakesmen’ in 1801.
He was further credited for bringing up the rail gauge.
