About George Steinbrenner
George Steinbrenner’s knowledge in business started when he was only nine years old. George, with the help of his father, began raising and selling fowls as part of his family’s business. He was also a sport enthusiast, and at college, he served as an assistant coach.
In the 1960s, he decided to look at the business aspect of his passion (sport), which informed his decision to buy the Cleveland Pipers franchise. The team was then participating in the National Industrial Basketball League. They folded in 1962.
He would best be remembered as the charismatic owner and leader of MLB side New York Yankees. Steinbrenner, together with some investors, purchased the team in 1973 from American broadcasting firm, CBS, in a deal worth around $10 million. He was then the majority shareholder and had lots of control over the team.
Family
He was raised as one of the children of Rita and Henry George Steinbrenner II. He had two sisters named Judy and Susan.
Until his death, he was married to Elizabeth Joan Zieg. The couple were blessed with four kids including Harold and Hank Steinbrenner who managed their father’s business after his death.
Education
In 1948, he graduated from Culver Military Academy. He later attended Williams College where he obtained his first degree. He further studied at Ohio State University for his master’s program.
Honors
Between 1997 and 2001, he won the Outstanding Team ESPY Award on three separate occasions. He was also a recipient of The Flying Wedge Award. In 1969, he received the American Academy of Achievement’s Golden Plate Award.
Trivia
During his time as the owner of New York Yankees, the franchise won the World Series championship seven times.
