About George Santayana
George Santayana is the name by which the English-speaking world refers to Jorge Agustín Nicolás Ruiz de Santayana y Borrás, a Spanish-born philosopher, essayist, novelist and poet. He is remembered best for his aphorisms which have been cited so frequently that they have become clichéd. Having studied in Harvard where he formed the Philosophical Club, he later taught in the institution from 1889 to 1912, when he permanently relocated to Europe. His well-known works include “The Last Puritan”, “The Life of Reason” and “The Sense of Beauty”.
Family Life
He was the son of Agustín Ruiz de Santayana and Josefina Borrás. He had three elder half-siblings from his mother’s previous marriage. He was never married.
Achievements
He was a recipient of the Royal Society of Literature Benson Medal and the Columbia University Butler Gold Medal.
Death
He died in Italy on 26 September, 1952 aged 88.
