George McGovern was an American politician, author and historian who served as the United States Senator from South Dakota from 1963 to 1981. He is also known for being the Democratic Party's presidential nominee for the 1972 United States presidential election.
Family Life
He was the oldest of his parents' four children. In 1943, he got married to Eleanor Stegeberg, with whom he had five children. He and Eleanor remained together until her death in 2007.
Trivia
He joined the U.S. Army Air Forces and fought in World War II.
He strongly opposed the Vietnam War.
He was very passionate about ending hunger in the United States and all over the world. This passion saw him play an instrumental role in creating the United Nations' famous World Food Program.
