About Georg Simmel
Georg Simmel was a German philosopher and sociologist who was praised for setting the tone for the development of the sociological antipositivism theory. A student of the Neo-Kantianism school of thought, Simmel was seen as a forerunner in the study of symbolic interactionism, as well as urban sociology.
His ideas were documented in his numerous books. Some of his most popular publications were titled “The Philosophy of Money” and “The Metropolis and Mental Life”. He also worked as a teacher at a number of universities including the Universities of Berlin, and the University of Strasbourg.
Family
He was the son of Eduard Simmel, a businessman, and his Jewish wife Flora Bodstein. He married philosopher Gertrud Kinel, also known as Marie-Luise Enckendorf, in 1890. They had a child called Hans Eugen Simmel.
Education
He attended Humboldt University of Berlin where he read history and philosophy.
Trivia
Simmel taught some renowned philosophers like Max Scheler, and György Lukács.
He was influenced by the likes of Max Weber, and Immanuel Kant.
