About Georg Cantor
Georg Cantor is regarded as one of the world’s most influential mathematicians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The German mathematician is best known as the creator of the set theory which would eventually become a fundamental mathematical theory.
He is also the formulator of the theory of transfinite numbers, which attracted harsh criticism from other prominent mathematicians. Cantor became a full professor at the University of Halle at the age of 34, in 1879.
Family Life
He was born to a Russian couple as the eldest of their six children. His family migrated to Germany when he was 11 years old. He was married to Vally Guttman with whom he had six children.
Achievements
He was the recipient of the Royal Society’s Sylvester Medal in 1904.
Death
He died on January 6, 1918, following a heart attack. He had suffered from several bouts of depression in the years leading to his death.
