About Georg Büchner
The German dramatist’s works have generally been described by scholars to be ahead of their time and therefore making it relevant in present times.
Early Years
Born in Goddelau in Hessen, Germany, he studied medicine at Strasbourg in 1831 and read philosophy and history later at University of Giessen. There, he dabbled in politics and contributed to plotting a conspiracy against the Hessian administration.
Literary Work
He later settled in Zurich where he channelled his efforts into writing plays that depicted his political views. His debut play “Danton's Tod” was published in 1835. The play’s follow up “Lenz” was inspired by the life of German poet Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz.
His unfinished but most renowned work was “Woyzeck”. The work recounted the story of a Slavic soldier who took his own life. Believed to be based on real life events, it was published posthumously and made into an opera by Austrian composer Alban Berg.
Legacy
In his memory, the Georg Büchner Prize is awarded annually to honour pivotal literary contributions.
