About Gene Kranz
Eugene Francis Kranz, famously called Gene Kranz, is a renowned American aerospace engineer and famous space hero. He has utilized his expertise to serve in various missions and programs of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), such as the “Apollo 11” and “Apollo 13” and he has worked as the organization’s deputy flight director.
Background & Education
He is of German descent and was born in Toledo, Ohio. He is a 1951 alumnus of Central Catholic High School in Toledo.
He holds a BSc degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Saint Louis University. In 1955, he completed pilot training at Texas’ Lackland Air Force Base and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. In 1962, he was discharged as a Captain from the US Air Force Reserve.
NASA Career Highlights
During his 37-year career at NASA, he contributed his expertise to many top projects. He worked as the agency’s assistant director of flight operations and was promoted to director of mission operations in 1983.
He directed “Apollo 11”, the world’s first spaceflight to land men on the Moon and successfully directed the Mission Control team’s efforts in saving the space crew of “Apollo 13”.
Major Honor
He received a “Presidential Medal of Freedom” from ex-US President Richard Nixon for his brilliance on “Apollo 13”.
