Early Life
At the University of Kansas' School of Journalism, he earned his bachelor's degree in science in 1984. In 1996, Purdue University awarded him a Master of Arts degree.
Career
The artist began his street photography career before enrolling at University of Kansas. He worked as a freelance war photographer while also working as a part-time journalist for the University Daily Kansan newspaper, selling his work to the Associated Press, United Press International, and other news organizations.
He published his first book of international street photography, a chronicle of his experiences, in February 1999. He received recognition for his work in Montserrat a year later when he was named the "International Reader's Competition" winner.
He has experience in both film and digital photography and has traveled to six different continents. His writings have covered a wide range of subjects and problems, from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana to guerilla battles in South America.
