About Garth Ennis
Garth Ennis is a British comic book and graphic novel author. Some of his notable works include “Preacher”, “The Boys”, “Punisher”, and “Hitman”. Many of his works have been adapted into very successful movies.
Early Life and Career
Raised as an atheist, Ennis was six years old when he first heard about God. He found the idea of God to be strange and frightening at that time but later used that experience to create his hit comic book series “Preacher”.
Ennis began his comic book writing career on his 19th birthday in 1989. His first series was “Troubled Souls”, which featured in the critically acclaimed British comic magazine, Crisis. “Troubled Souls” was a success, and Ennis released a sequel later.
In 1991, he had the opportunity to work on an American comic when he took over “Hellblazer”, a horror series from DC comics. He wrote the series until 1994, often co-writing with Steve Dillon, with whom he would later collaborate on other works. The pair created “Preacher”, which ran from 1995 to 2000. “Preacher” is widely regarded as one of Ennis’ best and most popular works. Aside from DC Comics, he also worked with Marvel Comics and other independent publishers.
Awards and Recognition
Ennis has won several awards throughout his career, including the National Comics Award for Best Writer (1997), the Eagle Award for Favorite Color Comic Book (1999), and the Irish Comics News Award for Best Irish Writer (2021).
Trivia
Ennis did not start reading superhero comics until his late teens. Before then, he enjoyed reading war comics.
