About Garrincha
Garrincha was a professional football player and a native of Brazil. He played as a midfielder. He was ranked amongst the greatest footballers of all time. Other sports analysts, critics, and individuals recognized him as the greatest dribbler of all time.
Garrincha was the first-ever footballer to have won the FIFA World Cup, the Golden Boot, and the Golden Ball in a single world cup campaign. Although he was naturally talented with his feet, he never played professional football until he was mature and even had a wife before he made his professional debut with Serrano FC in 1951.
In 1953, Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas Football Club signed Garrincha. He spent most of his career with the club. In 1966, he joined Corinthians and played for the said team for two years. After which he moved to Atlético Junior in 1968. Other clubs he played for include Flamengo, and Olaria. At the end of his career, he made 395 appearances for club and country while scoring 114 goals.
He played his first game for Brazil in 1955. Garrincha represented his nation at the 1958 FIFA World Cup, 1962 FIFA World Cup, and the 1966 FIFA World Cup.
Family
He was born to Amaro F. dos Santos and Maria Carolina. He married twice. First to Nair Marques – from 1952 to 1965, then to Elza Soares – from 1966 to 1982. He gave birth to over ten children including, Manuel G. dos Santos Jr., Neném dos Santos, Ulf Lindberg, Tereza dos Santos, and Nadir dos Santos.
Death
He died of liver cirrhosis in 1983.
Awards
He won several trophies with Botafogo FC including the International Quadrangular Tournament (1954), State Championship (1957, 1961, and 1962), and the Panamaribo Cup (1964).
With Brazil, Garrincha won two FIFA World Cups, three O'Higgins Cup, and Oswaldo Cruz Cup in 1960.
Additionally, he received numerous individual accolades such as the 1962 FIFA World Cup Golden Ball and FIFA World Cup Golden Boot, Brazilian Championship Best Player in 1962, Rio-São Paulo Tournament Best Player (1962), and was included in the 1999 World Soccer's Greatest Players of the 20th century.
