About Galba
Galba, originally named Servius Sulpicius Galba, was the Roman Empire’s sixth Emperor and he ruled for seven months between AD 68 and AD 69. In addition, he was the earliest Emperor in the famous “Year of the Four Emperors”. He was widely considered a priggishly upright emperor, though several of his advisers were allegedly corrupt during his administration.
Background
Although he became a Roman emperor, he shared no relations with the emperors of the “Julio-Claudian dynasty”. However, he was born in Terracina, Roman Empire to the great ancient lineage and wealthy family of Gaius Sulpicius Galba and his wife, Mummia Achaia.
His stepmother, Livia Ocellina adopted him at a young age and gave him the name, Lucius Livius Ocella Sulpicius Galba.
Positions & Rise to Emperor
During the first AD century, he achieved a successful senatorial career and served in various important positions, including consul, praetor and the governor to Africa, Upper Germany, Hispania and Aquitania.
In AD 68, following the famous defeat of the “Vindex” rebellion and the death of Emperor Nero, he took advantage of both situations, marched on Rome with support from the “Praetorian Guard” and was later declared Emperor by the Senate.
Death
Marcus Otho murdered him on 15 January AD 69 to take his place as Roman Emperor. He died at age 70.
