About Friedrich Hölderlin
He was renowned as one of the greatest romantic poets in the German romantic era. His works have hugely influenced modern poetry and ideology. His novel “Hyperion” was the highlight of his writing career. He died in 1843 at 73.
Early Life & Education
He was born in Lauffen am Neckar, Germany. He attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Tubingen and worked as a tutor after graduation. He later enrolled in University of Jena in 1795.

Career
His career as a poet started to pick steam when he infused Greek syntax and myths. The German poet, who was also a philosopher, often explored the themes of divinity and the natural world. His works inspired the writings of famous thinkers like German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, Austrian poet and novelist Rainer Maria Rilke and Romanian-born poet Paul Celan. He translated the ancient Greek works by Sophocles – “Oedipus de Tyrann” and “Antigone” – into German.
Recognition
His poetry “Odes and Elegies” was translated by Nick Hoff in 2008. The translation won a PEN USA Award for Translation.
