Franz Ferdinand Rank
About Franz Ferdinand
Franz Ferdinand became the heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne at an unexpected point in his life after his father's and his cousin's deaths in the imperial line. It is often stated that his assassination in 1914 was the main catalyst for World War I, which started about a month after archduke's death.
Family Background
Franz Ferdinand was the eldest son of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria. His uncle was Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. Ferdinand married a lady-in-waiting in exchange for giving up his children's claim to the kingdom.
Military Life
Franz Ferdinand joined the Austro-Hungarian Army at an early age, like most men in the dynastic governing Habsburg family in their early years. At the ages of fourteen, twenty-two, twenty-seven, and thirty-one, he received promotions regularly and quickly, rising to the ranks of lieutenant, captain, and colonel. In 1913 he was appointed inspector general of the Austro-Hungarian armed forces.
Politics
The political philosophies of Franz Ferdinand have been characterized in different ways by historians. Some have emphasized his dynastic centralism, Catholic conservatism, and propensity to clash with other leaders, while others have emphasized his generally liberal views on the empire's nationalities.
Assassination
His death and that of his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, came at the hands of a Bosnian Serb named Gavrilo Princip. The assassin was said to be a member of Young Bosnia, a revolutionary group that was very active before World war I. The Archduke’s death caused a series of events that pitted major European powers against each other. Ultimately, World War I erupted, pitting Austria-Hungary and its allies against Serbia and its allies.
