About François Duvalier
François Duvalier’s political will was driven by the black nationalism movement in Haiti during the 1910s when a number of U.S. Marines invaded the country. It was during this period that he bought into the Pan-African ideologies.
In 1946, he was selected by then President Dumarsais Estimé to head the nation’s Public Health Service, before he was appointed the Minister for Health and Labor three years later. He later announced his intention to compete for the presidency in 1956 and was elected into office the following year.
After overcoming a failed coup d'état in July 1958, Duvalier created a paramilitary force known as Tonton Macoute which dealt with his opponents. He then became more autocratic and went into the 1961 elections unopposed. In 1964, he gave himself the “President for Life” title which kept him in office until his death in 1971.
