About Francis Galton
Francis Galton was one of the geniuses during the Victorian era. His knowledge covered a wide range of fields including geography, psychology, and sociology. He’s celebrated for coining the correlation concept which can be seen in the study of statistics.
In order to share his knowledge, Galton wrote more than 300 books and papers which include 1869’s “Hereditary Genius”. The book is considered as the first literature work which attempts to explain the study of greatness and genius.
Other studies that he has contributed to included differential psychology, and psychometrics. He’s also the creator of the Galton Whistle which is used to test the difference in hearing abilities.
Family
He was a descendant of one of the noble families in England. His dad, Samuel Tertius Galton, was a scientist and businessman. Samuel "John" Galton, his grandfather, was also a renowned businessman. He was the cousin of English biologist Charles Darwin and Douglas Strutt Galton, an engineer.
Galton married a lady called Louisa Jane Butler in 1853.
Education
He had his early education at King Edward's School, Birmingham and went on to study medicine at King's College London Medical School. He later read mathematics at the University of Cambridge, and Trinity College.
Achievements
His works earned him many awards such as the Copley Medal, and Royal Geographical Society’s “Founder's Medal”. In 1909, he became a knight of the British Empire.
