About Florenz Ziegfeld
Florenz Ziegfeld was an American theatrical impresario who perfected a form of musical comedy revue, the Follies, which is considered the pinnacle of the field.
Career
Ziegfeld, who was born in 1869 in Chicago to a classical pianist and a music teacher, chose a career in popular entertainment. He was first a booker of vaudeville performers and subsequently became a producer of plays primarily to highlight the abilities of his first wife Anna Held.
Beginning in 1907, he discovered his calling as the producer of the Follies, which he continued to create until 1931, with new editions released yearly or semi-annually. Despite the fact that the Follies were most known for its extravagant sets and gorgeous women, Ziegfeld was a master at recognizing and nurturing comedy talent, presenting such luminaries as Fanny Brice, Bert Williams, Will Rogers, W. C. Fields, Eddie Cantor, and others.
Personal Life
He married two of his biggest stars, Anna Held and Billie Burke. By the latter, he had a daughter called Patricia Ziegfeld Stephenson.
Death
On July 22, 1932, Ziegfeld died in Hollywood, California, from pleurisy caused by a prior lung ailment. He'd only been in Los Angeles for a few days after being released from a New Mexico mental institution.
He was survived by his daughter and widow actress Billie Burke. The latter turned to film acting in order to pay off the enormous amount of debt that had accumulated following the death of Ziegfeld.
