About Filippo Volandri
Filippo Volandri is a retired Italian tennis player who began his professional career in 1997. He gained worldwide recognition in 2006 when he won the Sicily International after defeating Nicolás Lapentti in the final. He caused an upset the following year when he beat then-number one seed, Roger Federer, at the Rome Masters.
He has participated in both the single and doubles events at all the four Grand Slam tournaments. Volandri also represented his country at the 2004 Olympic Games.
Controversies
The Association of Tennis Professionals gave Volandri a three-month suspension after he tested positive for a banned substance, though the International Tennis Federation had permitted the Italian to use the drug. The decision was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Prior to that, he was cited in a match fixing and betting scandal.
