Fernanda Montenegro is a Brazilian actress. She is mostly known for playing the leading role in the 1998 Brazilian and French movie “Central Station”, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for “Best Actress”. The Rio de Janeiro-born actress was the first Brazilian to earn that nomination. She was also the first Brazilian to win an International Emmy for Best Actress for her role in the 2013 film “Doce de Mãe.”
Career
Montenegro began her acting career in the 1950s in theatre, performing in stage plays such as “Happy Songs on the Mountain”. It wasn’t until 1963 that she took her first role in telenovelas. She starred in hits, including “Pouco Amor Não é Amor”, “A Muralha”, and “Sangue do Meu Sangue.” After a brief return to theatre, Montenegro returned to TV in the 1980s and continued to act well into the early 2010s.
Awards and Recognition
In 1999, Montenegro received the Grã-Cruz da Ordem Nacional do Mérito. She has also won over 10 awards for her roles in movies and theatre.
Personal Life
She married fellow actor and co-star Fernando Torres in 1954 and the pair stayed married until 2008 when Torres passed away. They had two children, Fernanda and Cláudio Torres, who are also active in the film industry.
