About Fela Kuti
Fela Kuti, also known professionally as “Fela”, was a celebrated Nigerian composer, multi-instrumentalist and human rights activist best remembered for creating the famous Afrobeat genre of music and spreading it outside his native Nigeria. Some of his notable songs include Lady, Sorrow Tears and Blood and Zombie.
Family Life
He was born to renowned feminist activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and Reverend Israel Ransome-Kuti. He grew up with brothers Olikoye and Beko Ransome-Kuti, who both became renowned doctors. He got married to 27 women in the late 1970s and fathered numerous children, including musician Femi Kuti.
Trivia
He died of AIDS in 1997.
He was an ardent supporter of polygamy.
In 1978, while performing the hit song Zombie at a concert in Ghana, violence erupted, which forced the authorities in Ghana to ban him from coming back to the country.
