About Fats Waller
Fats Waller, born Thomas Wright Waller, was an American jazz pianist, composer, singer, songwriter, organist, violinist and comedic entertainer. Counted amongst the all-time greatest jazz pianists, he was also the first jazz musician to be proficient at the organ and was only 15 years old when he started playing it professionally at theatre and cabaret performances. As a songwriter and composer, he also wrote songs for Broadway revues. His most popular songs include “Ain’t Misbehaving”, “Squeeze Me” and “Honeysuckle Rose”.
Family Life
His pastor father, Edward Martin Waller was not enthused with his decision to perform professionally as a jazz musician. His mother, Adeline Locket Waller was also a musician. He had a son from his first marriage to Edith Hatchett, which lasted from 1920 to 1923. He had two more sons with his second wife, Anita Rutherford.
Achievements
He is an inductee of the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. His songs were also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Death
He died from pneumonia on December 15, 1943.
