About Fanny Stevenson
Fanny, the wife of the Scottish novelist, Robert Louis Stevenson is best known as an American writer.
Early Life
Born in Indiana, she was the eldest of six children. She started pursuing her writing career at an early age.
First Marriage
At age 17, she married her first husband, Samuel Osbourne, a lieutenant to the Governor of Indiana. Samuel's serial womanising created a rift in the marriage. After having three children, she headed off to the Académie Julian where both she and her daughter, Belle, enrolled as students. Shortly afterwards, her youngest child, Hervey, contracted Tuberculosis and succumbed to the disease.
Second Marriage
A devastated Fanny moved to the French countryside, Grez-sur-Loing. There, she met and fell in love with novelist Robert Louis Stevenson. She divorced Samuel in 1879 and married Robert the following year in San Francisco. They remained married until his death in 1894.
Writing
The year 1888 saw Fanny publish her short story, “The Nixie”.
Legacy
Fanny's character was portrayed by Aline Towne in the “Great Amulet" episode of the TV anthology series, “Death Valley Days”.
