About Evangelista Torricelli
Italian scientist Evangelista Torricelli is the inventor of the barometer and is also known for being the first person to create a sustained vacuum. His works in geometry also helped in the development of integral calculus.
Early Life and Education
Torricelli was born in Rome in the 17th century. His family was very poor, and upon seeing his talents, his parents sent him to live with an uncle to ensure he was given a decent education. He enrolled at a Jesuit College in 1624, where he studied mathematics and philosophy for two years. He went on to study science and mathematics under Benedetto Castelli, a professor of mathematics. Torricelli befriended astronomer and geometry expert, Raffaello Magiotti and Antonio Nardi.
Career and Major Accomplishments
Inspired by the writings of the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei, he wrote a treatise on mechanics, which impressed Galileo. Torricelli served under the astronomer as his assistant and secretary during the last three months of his life. Galileo later appointed him to succeed as the professor of mathematics at the Florentine Academy.
Despite being the first person to create a sustained vacuum during his career, Torricelli never published his findings.
Death
He died from fever in 1647, shortly after his 39th birthday, leaving all his belongings to his adopted son, Alessandro.
