About Eugene O'Neill
Eugene O'Neill was an American playwright widely remembered for his 1956 masterwork Long Day's Journey into the Night, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest American plays of the 20th century. His other notable plays include 1920's Beyond the Horizon, 1921's Anna Christie and 1923'sStrange Interlude. In 1936, he was honored with the highly prestigious Nobel Prize for Literature.
Family Life
He was born to Ella O'Neil and James O'Neill. He was married three times and fathered three children: Eugene O'Neill Jr., Oona and Shane O'Neill.
Trivia
He was portrayed by actor Jack Nicholson in the 1981 epic drama film Reds.
He disowned his daughter Oona after she got married to the legendary British comic actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin.
He also disowned his son Shane, who committed suicide few years later.
His son Eugene became an alcoholic and committed suicide at the age of 40 in 1950.
