About Ethan Allen
Ethan Allen’s role during the American Revolutionary War cannot be overlooked. He formed and led a group of forces known as the Green Mountain Boys to seize Fort Ticonderoga. The action, according to many historians, was the beginning of a series of actions taken against Britain by the Americans. He also goes down in history as the co-founder of the Vermont state.
Arrest
After taking control of Fort Ticonderoga, Allen and his team tried to take over the city of Montreal. They failed in their attempt and he was arrested by the British in 1775. He was held hostage in a number of Royal Navy ships before he was finally freed in 1778.
Family
He was raised by his parents Mary Baker and Joseph Allen, alongside seven siblings including Heman and Ira who played pivotal roles in founding Vermont. He married a woman called Mary Brownson in 1762 and were together until her death in 1783.
He had three kids with Frances Montresor Brush Buchanan. Their children were Ethan Alphonso Allen, Frances Margaret "Fanny" Allen, and Hannibal Montresor.
Death
During one of his trips home, he experienced an unpleasant apoplectic fit which left him unconscious. He kicked the bucket some hours later.
Trivia
Before his death, Allen published many books with the most popular one titled “A Narrative of Colonel Ethan Allen's Captivity”.
