Early Life
Son of a physician, this actor began learning his craft at an early age from his father’s patient Edwin Melvin, and by the age of five, he was already on stage acting, including featuring on a Shakespeare play as the “ghost” of Hamlet.
Career
Truex made his first Broadway appearance in 1908 in a play titled “Wildfire”. He then went on to star in the 1913 play “A Good Little Devil”. He made his film debut in the 1913 classic “Caprice”.
Truex got the lead role in David Belasco’s 11915 musical “Very Good Eddie”. However, he went on a 20-year hiatus but made a comeback in the 1938 adventure film “The Adventures of Marco Polo”. In the film, which was directed by Archie Mayo, Truex appeared alongside Sigrid Gurie and Gary Cooper.
The actor was the lead on the television show “The Truex Family”. Later in life, Truex played the elderly comedic support actor in television shows like “Jamie”, “Pete and Gladys”, and “Father Knows Best”.
Personal Life
By 1934, Truex had been married three times. He fathered three children in total.
Death
Truex died of a heart attack in 1973.
